Railway station platform — WETRAFFIC Basel East

At Basel East railway station, the application of the WETRAFFIC thin-film system on the platform surface was implemented. The project was aimed at increasing the safety of passenger movements and improving visual navigation in the space of railway infrastructure.

The application was carried out in the immediate vicinity of the track body, where high demands are placed on anti-skid properties, surface resistance and long-term functionality.

Characteristics of the implementation

The implementation involved the application of a thin-film surface system to the pedestrian sections of the platform including line markings for a safe distance from the rail edge.

Included in the works were:

  • preparation of the underlying surface of the platform
  • WETRAFFIC thin-film coating application
  • creation of guidance and safety lines
  • final closure and quality control

The surface has been designed with an emphasis on the safe movement of passengers even under increased operating loads.

Functional benefits

The application brings several key benefits:

  • improvement of the anti-skid properties of the walking surface
  • increase passenger safety
  • optical delineation of the safety zone of the platform
  • better orientation of people with reduced ability to move
  • resistance to weathering and operational loads

The use of technology in railway infrastructure

The project in Basel East confirms the wide possibilities of using the WETRAFFIC system beyond road transport.

The technology also finds application in:

  • on railway platforms
  • in public transport terminals
  • on transfer nodes
  • in areas with increased passenger movement
